I'm not a girl who's going to be making fresh-squeezed orange juice daily. That's not who I am. My interest in this product was primarily culinary in nature. I'm a reasonably serious home chef and a pretty good one, but I can be lazy. I'll often substitute bottled juice for fresh-squeezed in recipes. I was hoping this machine would inspire me to use fresh, but I'm not sure that it will.
There are a few reasons for that. The central juicing element is quite large, more appropriate for juicing oranges and grapefruits than smaller lemons and limes. Also, while the elements are fairly easy to clean, with many of them dishwasher-safe, it's still a lot of clean-up for a few tablespoons of juice. Having now tested the juicer, it seems that investing in a good quality manual juice press would make a lot more sense for that purpose.
That said, this juicer is easy to use and works well enough. And, at the risk of sounding exactly as geeky as I am, it was kind of fun to use. Well, at least it was more fun than juicing by hand. I juiced some grapefruits the other morning, and I do have to admit that it was a treat. First you press down against the central element. It spins and takes care of the juice and a great deal of pulp which gets trapped in the sieve. After you've done that part, remove the fruit and cover with the plastic lid. Press down and the juice and pulp trapped in the sieve spins at a higher rate of speed, extracting as much juice as possible from the pulp. Some pulp will find its way into your juice, but not too much. I'm not a pulp fan myself, but the amount was acceptable. The machine was quiet and performed well.
This isn't a high-end juicer, and parts of it feel sort of cheap, such as the plastic spout through which the juice pours. Still, it does function exactly as promised. I can see myself using this machine for extracting large amounts of juice at a time, a pitcher of grapefruit juice or fresh lemonade. And between this machine and the farmers' market outside my front door, I'll be far more inclined to do just that on a regular basis.
